The Toy Story movies aren’t strictly about Buzz Lightyear, but rather a toy version of the character from a fictional pop culture IP in the Toy Story universe. Ironically, that necessitated a change simply owing to the conceptual nature of Lightyear. Allen first took on the role in the original 1994 Toy Story, the groundbreaking first feature from Pixar Studios that not only launched its extraordinary run of instant classics, but turned Buzz and his pal Woody the Cowboy into household names. “We needed a new voice for Buzz,” was the simple statement, and the reasons why came down to the nature of the project.
